Sad news from Tshiaberimu

Category: Gorillas, Tshiaberimu, Virunga National Park | Date: Feb 18 2009 | By: tshiaberimu

Hello, this is Tuver.

I hate to have to bring you bad news from Mount Tshiaberimu again. After the excitement of the new baby gorilla, I am pained to announce that the baby died. Sadly this is not unusual for gorillas, who have an extremely high mortality rate of 30%.

Shortly after we heard of the death of this precious new baby, I was devastated to hear about the death of another Mt Tshiaberimu gorilla - the magnificent Silverback Nzanzu. Nzanzu was an elderly silverback, who lived with his son Mukokya. While an autopsy is being carried out on his body, with the help of MGVP, we believe he died from old age.

Nzanzu was part of the original Kipura family, which split in 2002 allowing Nzanzu to form the Lusenge family with adult female Mwengesyali and their son Mukokya. This new group lived happily until 2007 when Mwengesyali left to form the Mutsunga group, leaving Nzanzu and his son Mukokya alone. In recent months the rangers had have been reporting that Nzanzu was looking increasingly old.

While this is very sad news for Mt Tshiaberimu, at least we can feel reassured that these two gorillas, at different stages of their lives, died naturally in their home environment.

Here is a photo of Nzanzu, taken in 2006.

Very, very sorry to hear about the baby passing away.

What age was Nzanzu estimated to be? He was very lucky to have lived into old age. What will become of Mukokya? Will he try to join another group? Is that possible?

Oh Tuver, I am sorry. I am really hoping that some joy comes Mt. Tshiaberimu’s way soon…there has been such sad news there lately. Though you are right, it is an easier pill to swallow I suppose, when the deaths are determined by the compassion of nature and not the selfishness and violence of man. My best to all of you and hello to Jean Claude.

Hi Tuver, thanks for telling us about the baby and Nzanzu. Do you have any idea how old he was when he died? I’m so sorry to hear this sad news and I hope things get happier for all of you and the gorillas soon. Christine’s right, it’s been a hard time for everyone at Mt. Tshiaberimu.

This is very, very sad news. I am so sorry. I’m sure that Nzanzu is in whatever heaven is taking care of the little baby who was taken away too soon. May good news come from Tshiaberimu soon!

Dear all,
Many thanks for your support to Mt Tshiaberimu. It is a very bad experience to loose 5 gorillas in one year. We are trying to look for a way to save the remaing small group. I thing with the exchange experiences from MGVP,CTPH and you we can be sure to see that increasing.
Many thanks again.
Jean Claude
